Bringing value-based education in focus
It was the dream of our founder, Dr. TS Soundram, that we must be able to provide holistic education to children in rural areas at an affordable cost. Following the demise of Dr. Soundram in 1984, it was thought that it would be a fitting tribute to her to start a school at Gandhigram that would make her dream a reality. Dr. T.S. Soundram Vidyalaya was thus opened in the Lakshmi College of Education campus in 1985 and has now become a support system for our teacher education program. At the school, we strive to teach children to follow the Gandhian values and guide them to build a world free of violence and discrimination on the basis of caste, creed and religion.
The Vidyalaya has classes from kindergarten to 5th standard, with 170 students and 8 teachers. The medium of instruction is English. It is recognized by the Department of Education, Government of Tamil Nadu.
The school functions on the belief of providing a conducive and liberal atmosphere for children which would ensure achieving their full learning potential in a stress-free manner. Matriculation curriculum and textbooks have been followed in the school, with emphasis on co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. It boasts facilities like a library containing over 1500 books and a well-equipped laboratory. Transport facility to the children of the school is provided, as nearly 95 percent of them come from villages around Gandhigram.
It is our earnest hope that children from our school spread the Gandhian values like love, non-violence, truth and cleanliness that were imbibed in them at the school. We are proud to say that they are contributing to the society as teachers, nurses and technocrats, propagating the message of Gandhigram across the country.
